In this article we will go over the steps for transferring a domain from one registrar to another.
Domain registration is highly secure. It takes a lot to move a domain name and this is a good thing. It helps you keep your domain safe from an unauthorized transfer.
Typically a domain is "locked" from transfer and will need to be unlocked to get the transfer started.
Also, there's a transfer code you'll need which is provided from the current registrar upon request. Some registrars make you wait for this code, but in our example, we are going to use Hover.com. But the concept is the same at every registrar.
Step 1: Current owner of a domain name logs into their account, unlocks the domain name (transfer lock) and grabs the transfer code.
Step 2: The current owner shares this transfer code with the new (requesting) owner.
Step 3: The requesting (new) owner establishes an account with a registrar of their choosing. In our example we'll use Hover.com. This new requesting user creates an empty account. This is necessary because the domain name will need a destination account for the transfer.
Step 4: The requesting owner makes the request on Hover.com. There's a link on the homepage to request a domain. All registrars have a link like this. This process is similar to online shopping. You request the domain which puts it in a shopping cart in the new registrar. The cost is typically $20 but can be more if it's a high demand domain name. In order to proceed, you'll need the transfer code. Enter that code in the field that asks for it and it will put the domain in the shopping cart.
Step 5: Check out. The checkout button should become available, you can pay the fee and check out. This begins the transfer process.
Step 6: Be patient. The transfer process takes a few days. You will get an email receipt for the transfer request and then another once it's complete.
NOTE: The DNS records do migrate through the transfer. This means any custom records will remain and should not change email or web settings. This is a good thing!
